NHL Game Day – 2/11/17

San Jose Sharks (70 pts) @ Philadelphia Flyers (59 pts)

Brendan: Sharks win 3-1.

Madalyn: The San Jose Sharks are on a three game slide and can’t seem to stop teams from scoring on them. The Philadelphia Flyers can’t seem to find the back of the net, scoring just one goal in three straight losses. One thing has to give in order for a team to come up victorious. This game could get ugly with both teams trying to get win for the first time in a week. Sharks win 2-1.

Vancouver Canucks (54 pts) @ Boston Bruins (60 pts)

Brendan: Bruins win 3-1.

Madalyn: Both the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins are fighting their way back into the playoff picture. For the Canucks they earned a much needed victory Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Columbus, ending a four game losing streak. On the other side of the ice, the Bruins are coming off a win and their first victory under their interim head coach. Tonight’s matchup could possibly feature two great games in Ryan Miller and Tukka Rask. Miller has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL since Christmas and is coming off a shutout on Thursday. Canucks win 2-1 (OT).

New York Islanders (58 pts) @ Ottawa Senators (62 pts)

Brendan: Senators win 4-1.

Tonight the Ottawa Senators may see the return of their starting goaltender Craig Anderson. Anderson husband by his wife side for several months as she battles cancer, so this could be an emotional night for the team if Anderson get the start. This game is important for both teams as they try to inch closer to a playoff spot. The New York Islanders are only two points out from a Wild Card spot and have been on fire as of late. With the emotion surrounding this game for the Senators and both teams pushing to get back in the playoffs, it will be a great game to watch. Senators win 2-0.

Florida Panthers (56 pts) @ Nashville Predators (60 pts)

Brendan: Predators win 3-2.

Madalyn: Both the Panthers and the Predators need wins in order to boost themselves towards the playoffs. Nashville is coming off a loss in which they outplayed the Rangers but mental mistakes cost them the victory. The Panthers need to leapfrog three teams to get back to the playoffs, and have been doing well with a 3-1-1 record over their last 5 games. Panthers win 3-2.

Carolina Hurricanes (55 pts) @ Dallas Stars (52 pts)

Brendan: Stars win 4-3.

The Dallas Stars have found almost every way to lose a game, after Thursday they scored on their own empty net. The Carolina Hurricanes need the two points as they will have a five day break before playing again. The Stars have struggled against the Eastern Conference while the Hurricanes have been able to find success against the Central Division but can’t seem to win on the road. Hurricanes win 4-3 (OT).

Detroit Red Wings (54 pts) @ Columbus Blue Jackets (73 pts)

Brendan: Blue Jackets win 3-2.

Madalyn: This is a repeat of Tuesday night’s game which was physical and controversial. The Blue Jackets won the game in overtime after Brandon Dubinsky broke Zetterberg’s stick in the neutral zone. Injuries could play a factor in this game with the Red Wings struggling to stay healthy. Similar play to Tuesday is expected tonight, but with a different outcome. Red Wings win 3-2.

Buffalo Sabres (54 pts) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (61 pts)

Brendan: Maple Leafs win 4-2.

Madalyn: All I have to say is 0-2-0. The Buffalo Sabres can’t figure out how to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, and it won’t change tonight. Maple Leafs win 4-2.

St. Louis Blues (61 pts) @ Montreal Canadiens (70 pts)

Brendan: Canadiens win 5-2.

Madalyn: Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty put his team on his back on Thursday when Montreal defeated the Coyotes in overtime. In that game Montreal snapped a season long four game slide. The Canadiens are facing a St. Louis Blues team who has won four of its last five under their new coach. The Blues have the momentum, but the Canadiens showed the heart on Thursday. Blues win 3-2 (OT).

Colorado Avalanche (32 pts) @ New York Rangers (71 pts)

Brendan: Rangers win 5-1.

Madalyn: New York Rangers goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, make history tonight if his team is able to be the Colorado Avalanche. Lundqvist would become the 12th goalie in NHL history to win 400 games. The Rangers have a great opportunity to get him the win, with a four game win streak and facing the NHL’s worst team, the momentum is on their side. Rangers win 4-1.

Tampa Bay Lightning (55 pts) @ Winnipeg Jets (54 pts)

Brendan: Lightning win 3-2.

Madalyn: The Lightning and Jets are on the second game of a back to back, and both are coming off losses. The Jets were beaten badly by the Blackhawks, while the Lightning battled through overtime and a shootout. It is often said the home team as “home ice advantage” and it couldn’t be any truer in this sense. After the Lightning played their overtime/shootout, they still had to fly to Winnipeg. We could see one tired team on the ice tonight. Jets win 2-1.

Anaheim Ducks (58 pts) @ Washington Capitals (82 pts)

Brendan: Capitals win 5-3.

Madalyn: 11 straight home wins, five shutouts, and outscoring opponents 56-15 during that time. That’s is what the Ducks have to look forward to as they face the Capitals in DC. It’ll be hard to stop Washington’s momentum at home. Capitals win 5-2.

Pittsburgh Penguins (74 pts) @ Arizona Coyotes (41 pts)

Brendan: Penguins win 3-2.

Madalyn: It is not common for an NHL team to honor a player from a completely different sport, but Saturday night the Arizona Coyotes will honor Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has set many NFL records, but the Coyotes are trying to avoid being a part of a NHL record as they face the Pittsburgh Penguins. Penguins forward Sidney Crosby is just two points shy of 1000 for his career, and has had success against the Coyotes in the past. He has 20 points in 13 games against Arizona, and with the Coyotes currently one of the worst teams in the NHL, getting to 1000 could be a possibly tonight. Penguins win 3-2.

Chicago Blackhawks (73 pts) @ Edmonton Oilers (66 pts)

Brendan: Blackhawks win 4-3.

Madalyn: One team is on their third game in four nights, while the other is coming off their bye week. The Blackhawks played last night and won, but it will be hard when they face an Oilers team who hasn’t played in a week. Oilers win 4-3.

Pick-Em Leaderboard:

  1. Richard: 10-4 (.714)
  2. Aaron: 6-3 (.667)
  3. Matt: 23-12-1 (.639)
  4. Tyler: 22-14-5 (.537)
  5. Brendan: 31-20-9 (.517)
  6. Madalyn: 15-12-3 (.500)
