While the Super Bowl definitely overshadowed the three NHL games yesterday, in which the Kings lost 5-0 to the Capitals, the Oilers beat the Canadiens 1-0 in a shootout and the Rangers came out on top against the Flames 4-3.
It’s officially hockey and basketball season now, and the NHL returns on Monday night with three contests. Let’s take a look at who myself (@TheBKing4) and Madalyn Heimann (@MHeimannASU) chose for the games:
Buffalo Sabres (52 pts) @ New Jersey Devils (54 pts)
Brendan: Devils win 3-2.
Madalyn: The New Jersey Devils have been great on the road recently, but have not been able to win at home since Jan. 2. The Buffalo Sabres on the other hand are sitting in last place, but only 7 points behind the eighth place team. Both teams need the win, but the scrappy Sabres team will have a tough match up with a Devils team who is struggling at home. Sabres win 3-2.
Toronto Maple Leafs (57 pts) @ New York Islanders (54 pts)
Brendan: Maple Leafs win 4-2.
Madalyn: The New York Islanders were pushing their way up the standings, but suffered a disappointing losses to the Red Wings and Hurricanes on Friday and Saturday. The Toronto Maple Leafs snapped a three game losing streak Saturday, and are trying to find their way back into the playoff picture. The Islanders number one goaltender, Thomas Greiss, will be back in net tonight as he faces the Maple Leafs number one goalie in Frederick Andersen. It’ll be a matchup of the goalies in this one. Islanders win 2-1.
St. Louis Blues (55 pts) @ Philadelphia Flyers (59 pts)
Brendan: Flyers win 3-2 (OT).
Madalyn: A matchup featuring one of the best defenses in the NHL verse a team who has struggled to score goals. On paper this looks like a Flyers victory, but the Blues have a new coach and are sitting just outside the playoffs, so they are a team that can’t be overlooked. The Blues have had an emotional weekend with Robby Fabbri suffering a torn ACL in the team’s loss to the Penguins. St. Louis has lost six of eight, while the Flyers have gotten three straight solid performances in goal and have a 2-0-1 record over that time. Flyers win 3-1.
- Richard: 10-4 (.714)
- Tyler: 11-5 (.688)
- Aaron: 4-2 (.667)
- Brendan: 19-13 (.594)
- Matt: 15-12 (.556)
- Madalyn: 8-8 (.500)
